Did Shirish Kunder copied Kriti from Nepali filmmaker Aneel Neupane Facts Behind BOB VS KRITI
The world of show business is built upon glitz and glamour and on occasion is overshadowed by gloom of controversy. Recently two filmmakers Aneel Neupane and Shirish Kunder has been in the headlines and both of their respective short films – Bob and Kriti has been removed from YouTube.
It started out when Shirish Kunder who is best known for directing 2012’s Joker starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Chitrangada Singh and Farah Khan, uploaded his short movie Kriti on YouTube on 22nd June 2016. It garnered 2.5 million views and was adored by viewers for its compelling storyline and was widely appreciated. Soon after it was accused of plagiarism by 24 year old Nepali filmmaker Aneel Neupane. Neupane quickly took to facebook the next day (23rd June 2016) to claim that Kunder copied Bob and created Kriti. Previously he also had an altercation with Shahrukh Khan at Sanjay Dutt’s celebration party for his role in Agneepath in 2012.
uploaded his short movie Kriti on YouTube on 22nd June 2016.
In the facebook post, Neupane sincerely describes how he managed to wrap up the whole shoot in a budget of NRS. 50,000 (32,000 Indian Rupees) after pleading his friend from production company Jazz Productions based in Australia. He explained how the cast and crew believed in the script and even going as far as volunteering to help create the film.
Whereas On July 1st, director Shirish Kunder , actor Manoj Bajpayee along with the producer and lawyer called a press conference to address the plagiarism claim. During the 40 – minute interview, the team expressed derision towards their opponent Neupane and claimed that anyone can fiddle with Vimeo and Neupane changed the upload date of his short film Bob when in fact Vimeo doesn’t have that feature.
It was not professional how the Kriti team handled the interview. Shirish ridiculed that Neupane is a small time filmmaker and makes wedding videos. Manoj Bajpai, did not hesitate to jump in the bandwagon and added that he and his team are the real victims and Neupane took advantage of this controversy to gain publicity.
Kunder claimed that Neupane tampered with Vimeo’s features and changed the upload date of Bob. But Neupane recently published the drafts of his movies on June 25th through Jazz Production’s facebook page:
Even if Neupane created drafts after the controversy to protect himself, shots from Bob wouldn’t date back to August 2015.
Moreover, his video diary which was uploaded on April 16th hints that he had completed filming Bob by August 2015. Skip to 4:04 in the video to see sequences from Bob.
In the press conference, Kunder claimed that Bob was copied from Kriti and that Neupane altered the upload date to a previous date. But how can Bob be copied from Kriti when Kriti was released on July 22nd 2016 and Bob was available on Vimeo way back in October 2015 and YouTube in May 12, 2016.
Not only is the originality of Kunder’s short in question but also the promo poster is remarkably similar to Hideo Nakata’s horror film titled “Ghost Theater”. See comparison below:
The makers of Kriti replied that they will be filing a defamation suit against Neupane and it seem both will be involved in a long legal dispute. Unmistakably both movies have the exact plotline – a psychiatrist tries to treat a man who is unsure if his girlfriend exists outside his mind. Regardless of that fact, the evidence points to Kunder being unoriginal regarding his creative output.
The silver screen falls in the realm of art and authenticity is what sets apart one individual from another. If such blunders like plagiarism are made more than often in such a field, one could lose their fan base and integrity and deemed as a copycat by viewers and critics alike.
Judging from the evidence so far which side are you on? Are you with Kriti’s team or siding with Neupane’s Bob? Write down in the comments below:
